Video – What do you think?

I mentioned in April that I was going to take a different approach to recipes.  I think it best to tape myself cooking and then posting the video on this site.  I will type up the list of items used in the recipe in the body of the post.

What are your thoughts?  Is this something you would be interested in seeing?  I will need to invest in a camera if that is the case (used to have one but loaned it out and never got it back…this was the case with several other things…took a while for me to learn, okay?).

Below is a video I attempted using my Yoga 11e tablet.  It isn’t a complete recipe and it may be more comic relief than anything.

Seriously though…let me know if you will find recipes via video useful, helpful, and most importantly something you would watch on a regular basis.

Cut the Cake…

July 28, 2017 – You know, if I were to have written this yesterday I would have entitled this post, “Ice Cube” or “Today Was a Good Day”.  I spent the yesterday morning tending to the front yard in the sun, painted the ‘peace’ garden sign I picked up at the Lavender Festival the week before, ran into Kris and Kole (such a cutie and a TOTAL boy!!!! reminds me so much of my boys when they were small and of many of my grandsons…going to need to get them together when they come to visit), the windshield of the Bonneville was finally replaced, Kristina came over to hang out while Vera and KeKe played in KeKe’s room, I made tacos for dinner and, YES, some bomb salsa (hot house tomatoes, sweet onions, tubed cilantro, home-grown serrano peppers and Greek seasoning).  It was a really good day.

I’m in the midst of cleaning the house.  It’s been such a nice week weather-wise I’ve not spent much time indoors so have rather neglected things.  It’s cloudy today.  I’m spending the day doing laundry, cleaning and will cook something easy but I will bake a cake from scratch (dark chocolate with orange cream cheese frosting)!  Baking is something I’ve always left to others.  It is only in the last couple of weeks that I’ve taken it up.  So far, so good – with the exception of my cakes sticking to the pan, but frosting helps put it all back together :-)).

A morning ritual of mine is to sit outside on the patio, drink coffee and watch the birds.  This morning I noticed a difference.  Typically, the males eat and the females stand guard.  There are daily fights at the three (the hummingbirds have worked out a schedule so they rarely, if ever, fight) feeders.  The males would only allow one bird per feeder.  They would not even permit their female to eat while they ate.  Today, however, there were a large number of females at each of the feeders and they were all eating.  There at least three females feeding on a feeder at the same time.  Sometimes there were four or five females to a feeder.

In today’s political climate, my immediate thought was – why aren’t we running things?  Why aren’t we President?  Why aren’t we the majority in the House and Senate?  Can we not effectively work together?  Yes, some women can be catty – but even they can work with other women (and then talk behind their back – whatever).

It’s time, ladies.  No matter your race, religion, sexual orientation – if you have a plan for the good of our people, step up!!!  Your time is now.  We need you!

I started this blog so I could share recipes with my family.  I’m not good at writing recipes down.  (I think I said that when I started this site.)  Why I thought I would write recipes on a blog when I can’t write them on a 3×5 card or piece of paper, is beyond me.

About 3-4 weeks ago I started cooking on Sundays for the entire week.  I package the meals up in microwavable trays/plates/bowls that have fitted covers.  They are low-profile so I can stack them 2-3 high on each shelf in the fridge and 2-3 deep; 2-3 wide.  Needless to say, we have more than enough room for lunches and dinners for the entire week for the three of us (and then some!).

This past Sunday I made Chicken-n-Dumplings, Chicken Pot Pie, Meatloaf/Fried Chicken/ Chicken Fried Steak, Mashed Potatoes, Beef/Mushroom Gravy, Green Beans, and Sourdough Bread.  I decided to videotape myself making most of the above  and am going to post instead of posting recipes.

Beware…they are a work in progress.  Keilah watched one and she did quite a bit of laughing.  At one point she took the computer in to Dennis and they both laughed.  I promise I will work to improve.  Early shots miss food complete (very embarrassing).

Oh well, I’m sure I will make some of these meals several times again.

I’m baaack!

I have no excuses and a ton of excuses…fact is, I’ve been away for quite some time.  Well, I’m back!  Not only will I be sharing recipes and words of wisdom (my wisdom…take it or leave it), I will also be sharing product reviews from my personal perspective.i-am-back

For my first review, I’ll bring you into my 8-week Thrive challenge. My goal isn’t to sell you on this.  God knows how much I hate sales pitches, so I won’t be doing that.  What I will be doing is sharing my personal experience with this product over the next 8 weeks (assuming I stick with it the entire 8 weeks).  I do have concerns with this product and am trying it out to find out for myself if my concerns are valid or if what my neighbors are sharing as their experience, will be true for me.  I’m really hoping for the latter.

Why a blog?

I initially went into this thinking I wanted to do a food blog.  I love to cook and really like trying new recipes.  Growing up I liked to watch my dad cook.  Mom didn’t really enjoy cooking then (I understood why after having kids of my own) so really only did a couple of ‘specialty’ items – tuna casserole (I’d have to leave the house because the smell alone made me sick to my stomach) and creamed tuna fish and peas on toast (I don’t know of anyone else that ever had this but I do wish all of the years later that I got the recipe from my mom – there are times when I really miss her and feel I would be closer to her if I cooked this).

After having my first child I spent a great deal of time watching his paternal grandmother and great-grandmother cook.  I think they would both be surprised to know what an inspiration they have been to me and my cooking all of these years later.

My husband, Dennis, has really helped me refine recipes.  He has an awesome sense of taste and has helped me hone the use of spices in foods.  This past year I had weight-loss surgery (gastric sleeve) and since then I have acquired the need for heat (intense spice).  Weird, I know, but it has really heightened my ability to blend spices I’ve never used before.

As a young mother (I had my first child at 17, second child at 19, and third child at 22) I hated to cook.  I viewed it as a chore.  It’s funny looking back at that knowing now I absolutely love cooking.

As I sit and start this blog, I realize it needs to be so much more than merely a food blog.  Cooking for me is an expression of love for family.  That love, coupled with the fact that I’m always asked for recipes and can never really give them because I just do it (cook) leads me to this…a blog that I hope to be my legacy to my family.

In less than 7 days I will turn 51.  At 51 I have five children (I gave birth to three) and ten grandchildren (8 boys and 2 girls).  The last year has been an interesting one – lots of changes both good and bad and while I try to find the good in everything, at least one of those changes leaves me perplexed to this day.  I’ve come to learn first hand that life is filled with unexpected twists and turns – many of which are life changing.

There will come a time when I won’t physically be near my children and grandchildren, whether because of a move to sunshine (my body and soul yearn for warmth and sunshine on a daily basis) or because my soul has moved on to be with loved ones already departed and my body returned to ash, and I want to make sure they have easy access to recipes, stories from days gone by, my favorite quotes and why they mean so much to me, and how important they are to me and how much I love them.

While this first post will land on Facebook and Twitter, I don’t know that all will.  I don’t mind sharing recipes and stories with all (especially if it could be of help to someone else), there are some things that will simply be meant for family.

Either way, I hope you enjoy it.
